Basic Surgical Skills

Target Population:
Trainees from all surgical subspecialties (general surgery, gynecology, urology, thoracic surgery, neurosurgery, ENT, plastics and orthopedics).

Objectives:
To teach basic open and laparoscopic manual technical skills.

Course Description:
Participants practice basic manual surgical skills on different surgical simulators.  Topics covered include the principles of local anesthetics, tissue properties, tissue handling, different methods for suturing and knot-tying, use of energy sources, minor procedures (excision of skin lesions, lipomas and sebaceous cysts) and basic laparoscopic skills (camera navigation, bimanual dexterity and energy sources and trouble shooting).
