Communication and Debriefing Skills

Target Population:
Physicians, nurses and lawyers that serve as patient safety managers in public hospitals

Objectives:
The objective of this course is to improve communication skills and debriefing abilities of patient safety managers in dealing with patients, family members, medical staff and the media, and to discuss medical legal issues surrounding patient care.

Course Description:
Participants encounter simulated (actors) in extreme scenarios of a medical and ethical nature that occur in a hospital setting such as reaching out to a care taker needing immediate advice, a need to reprimand staff, dealing with an adverse event due to a medical error and informed consent.    Colleagues and debriefing facilitators observe the encounters through one-way glass panels, and audiovisual recordings are made for the debriefing sessions.  On completion of the encounter, the participant receives feedback from the simulated patient, colleagues and debriefing facilitators and the recorded encounter is watched and discussed in the debriefing session.
