Communication Skills and GI Procedural Training

Target Population:
Resident gastroenterologists

Objectives:
The objective of this course is to improve the communication and clinical skills required in preparing a patient for endoscopy, performing the procedure, and managing emergencies if they arise.

Course Description:
Participants improve technical and clinical skills on an endoscopy task trainer and once the participant is familiar with the task trainer they encounter simulated patients (actors) or their immediate family in scenarios focusing on informed consent, patient safety management; and how to deliver bad news.  Colleagues and debriefing facilitators observe the encounters through one-way glass panels, and audiovisual recordings are made for the debriefing sessions.  On completion of the encounter, the participant receives feedback from the simulated patient, colleagues and debriefing facilitators and the recorded encounter is watched and discussed in the debriefing session.
