Identification and Reporting of Abuse of the Elderly

Target Population:
Gerontologists from HMOs and public hospitals

Objectives:
The objective of this course is to improve the communication and clinical skills of gerontologists to better identify and treat geriatric patients with suspected abuse, and discuss medical legal issues.

Course Description:
The course is held in collaboration with Israel's Ministry of Health and the Jewish Federation of New-York. Participants encounter simulated geriatric patients (actors) or their immediate family in scenarios focusing on various issues surrounding geriatric abuse (including physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, financial abuse and neglect).  Colleagues and debriefing facilitators observe the encounters through one-way glass panels.  Upon completion of the encounter, the participant receives feedback from the simulated patient, colleagues and debriefing facilitators, while watching the recorded session.
